When a particle enters the atmosphere it heats up due to the air friction and the pull of gravity pulling the particle at a maximum speed. For instance if a meteor where to enter the earth atmosphere at kilometers per second, friction in air heats it up and ignites, this is what we call a shooting star, most particle reach the earth surface while some evaporate due to extreme temperature
